What’s The Line in The Sand?

Posted in Miscellaneous Stuff, Second Amendment by jesse on the August 6th, 2008

Last night’s Gun Nuts: The Next Generation podcast was well framed for the time constraints that BlogTalk radio places on its hosts.

However, I heard the guests and callers say something that should be addressed in another show (or format).  The gist of the statement was “I would invoke my right to revolution if the government crossed a certain line.”

My questions to all gun advocates that make this claim are following (in the context of Second Amendment rights).

  1. What level of government infringement would it take for you to take up arms?  (local, state, federal)
  2. What is the proverbial “line in the sand”?  (microchiping gun owners, federal id to purchase a gun)
  3. Would you be willing to act without organization?

These are just for starters.

When studying philosophy I found variations of Einstein’s “thought experiments” to be useful in determining personal boundaries. Simply start with an extreme, determine your position on the matter, then work back to a less-extreme example and repeat.

Here’s one: let’s say you’re put in the same position as that Maryland mayor — the government sends you pot, and then sends masked officers in plainclothes to break your door down, never announcing they’re police, and they kill your dogs.

But instead of your dogs, it’s your wife or daughter who’s killed, perhaps because she quite reasonably tried to defend herself from the armed, masked men. Would you take up arms then? Act without organization?

A similar question was raised once before. I answered it here: http://www.softgreenglow.com/wp/?p=1660
