Middle School Pilot for Birth Control Program

Posted in News & Current Events by jesse on the October 17th, 2007

Children in grades 6 through 8 will be eligible to receive prescription birth control (with written parental approval) from their school health center if the proposal passes the Portland School Committee this evening. The pilot school will be King Middle School. The “school health center” already dispenses condoms to middle school students.

Five of the 134 students who visited King’s health center during the 2006-07 school year reported having sexual intercourse, said Amanda Rowe, lead nurse in Portland’s school health centers.

“This is a service that is totally needed,” Rowe said. “It’s about very few kids, but they are kids who don’t have the same opportunities and access as other students.”

Maybe I’m old fashioned, but these are children we are talking about here. This is another great example of the nanny-state stepping in, and parents stepping back, and taxpayers footing the bill.

I cannot fathom sexual activity in those years of my life, and I guess this is a product of our environment today, primarily parents who default their duty of raising and educating their children to the government.

I can’t imagine that this community is proud of this development. Personally, I hope it fails.
