Middle School Pilot for Birth Control Program

Posted in News & Current Events by jesse on the October 17th, 2007

Children in grades 6 through 8 will be eligible to receive prescription birth control (with written parental approval) from their school health center if the proposal passes the Portland School Committee this evening. The pilot school will be King Middle School. The “school health center” already dispenses condoms to middle school students.

Five of the 134 students who visited King’s health center during the 2006-07 school year reported having sexual intercourse, said Amanda Rowe, lead nurse in Portland’s school health centers.

“This is a service that is totally needed,” Rowe said. “It’s about very few kids, but they are kids who don’t have the same opportunities and access as other students.”

Maybe I’m old fashioned, but these are children we are talking about here. This is another great example of the nanny-state stepping in, and parents stepping back, and taxpayers footing the bill.

I cannot fathom sexual activity in those years of my life, and I guess this is a product of our environment today, primarily parents who default their duty of raising and educating their children to the government.

I can’t imagine that this community is proud of this development. Personally, I hope it fails.

Why I Hope Romney Fails

Posted in National Politics by jesse on the October 9th, 2007

An man afflicted with Muscular Dystrophy confronted Mitt Romney after a talk this past Saturday morning concerning his stance on medical marijuana. Romney blew this guy off completely. Watch how he tries to run before the man asks his question.

When the heat is on, Romney runs.

Columbus Day

Here are some good quotes for this Columbus Day.

I also hate those holidays that fall on a Monday where you don’t get mail, those fake holidays like Columbus Day. What did Christopher Columbus do, discover America? If he hadn’t, somebody else would have and we’d still be here. Big deal. ~ John Waters, quoted in The Portable Curmudgeon Redux, compiled & edited by Jon Winokur, 1992

America’s one of the finest countries anyone ever stole. ~ Bobcat Goldthwaite

Illegal aliens have always been a problem in the United States. Ask any Indian. ~ Robert Orben

How the hell do you give someone credit for discovering something that had already been discovered? ~ Anonymous

Memphis General Election Today!

Posted in News & Current Events, Tennessee Politics by jesse on the October 4th, 2007

The Memphis municipal election is today, Tuesday, October 4, 2007. The polls close at 7pm this evening, I know that I will be watching the local networks closely for the election results.

I heard something rather disturbing from the Drake & Zeke show on 98.1 FM. A former Memphis resident, whom had moved to Mississippi 4-5 years ago stood in line at their old polling location and was able to cast a vote. By way of the local paper, also to my alarm, Harold Ford Sr., whose permanent residence is based in Florida (not Memphis) was allowed to vote during early voting.

Tennessee law requires voters to keep their permanent residence in the state, and according to state law, voters here can only have one permanent residence.

Given the track record of Shelby County elections, where dead people and felons seem to get to vote, I’m sure this one will be a photo finish.

More to come later.
